Two Japanese manufacturers have collaborated for the benefit of the environment.  Kyocera Solar, Inc. announced late last week that they have installed their solar modules in a new photovoltaic (PV) carport at Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Baja California (TMMBC) manufacturing plant in Tijuana.

The new carport canopy was inaugurated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Tijuana Mayor Carlos Bustamante; Federico Serrano Banuelos, president of the Maquiladora Industry Association of Tijuana (AIM); Joe Da Rosa, president of TMMBC; and David Hester, president of Kyocera Mexicana in Tijuana.

The new solar powered carport will cover a portion of TMMBC’s parking lot to harness the sun’s energy and reduce carbon emissions by more than 28 tons per year.  The solar powered carport is expected to generate up to 121 kilowatt hours of renewable electricity each day which is the equivalent to the daily energy requirements of about 15 homes in the Tijuana area.

Joe Da Rosa, president of TMMBC stated, “Toyota’s commitment to the environment is a way of life, both within our operations and in our products – as exemplified by award-winning vehicles like the Toyota Tundra pickup and Prius hybrid sedan.  We are pleased to partner with Kyocera to install this solar carport as a visible reminder of our efforts to create a healthier environment for future generations.”

Steve Hill, president of Kyocera Solar, Inc. said, “Kyocera is delighted to assist Toyota in achieving its renewable energy goals.  We are especially pleased to support applications like the Toyota manufacturing plant in Baja California and the globally renowned Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle.”

Toyota and Kyocera have both been prominent promoters of environmental management in their Baja California maquiladora facilities.

TMMBC is Tijuana’s first and only automotive OEM and has been manufacturing Toyota trucks and cars at the Baja California facility since its startup in 2002.  We are proud to have served a leading role in the recruitment of Toyota’s management and technical staff from startup to recent times and seen the plant evolve into a 985 employee plant.
