There’s good news on the horizon according to executive leaders of middle market companies in the US.

A recent business performance and economic outlook survey reports that confidence and optimism are growing among C-suite executives of mid-size companies.  The survey titled “The Middle Market Indicator” is conducted by the National Center for the Middle Market at Ohio State University.

More than 1,000 C-suite executives from diverse businesses throughout the US with revenues between $10M and $1B participated in the survey.  The survey serves as a snapshot of what these executives are thinking and experiencing during the 2nd quarter of the year.

Highlights from the survey include:

●  Sixty-three percent of the survey participants are planning to invest extra cash which represents a significant jump from the fifty percent that were planning to do so during the second quarter of 2012.

●  Sixty-four percent of mid-sized companies are expecting revenue to grow in 2014.

●  Confidence is higher in the US domestic economy than in the global economy.   Fifty-eight percent of survey participants reported being confident or somewhat confident in the US economy while only forty percent reported that they had that same level of confidence in the global economy.   This is a significant uptick in optimism given that a year ago, survey participants were only at thirty-six percent of confidence.

The survey reflects that concerns about healthcare costs, taxes and the labor skills gap continue to weigh heavily on growth plans.  The uncertainty of healthcare costs was listed as the biggest challenge with 92 percent of respondents calling it somewhat or highly challenging.
