“Choosing Mexico was quite deliberate”, Rupert Stadler, Audi’s President, said last week. He did so when breaking ground for the plant being built in San Jose Chiapa, State of Puebla.

This will be the home of the German company’s second plant in Mexico, where US$1.3 billion will be invested. Stadler’s words, such as the decision to establish here, were not improvised either: Mexico is, more and more, a sweet destination for automotive companies.

Only a few days earlier, in Celaya, State of Guanajuato, another great news was broken: US$470 million investment for the construction of a Honda transmissions plant. This investment joins another one for US$800 million announced last year by the same company to build an assembly plant, in Celaya as well, that will start operating early in 2014.

These last announcements add two points more to the already large map of Mexican automotive industry. Automobiles production disregards crisis in Mexico, and ranks eighth in the world, 2 million 884 thousand vehicles were produced here in 2012, 13.8% more than the previous year.
