Maquilas add 23,000 jobs

Maquiladora industry has generated close to 23,000 new jobs this year, according to data provided by Maquiladoras Association, Asociacion de Maquiladoras Asociacion Civil (AMAC).

A report from AMAC, based on figures from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) shows that last December maquiladora industry ended with 192,349 jobs. While with the growth this year, upon closing November maquiladoras reported 215,331 jobs, for a net gain of 22,982 jobs in 2012.

Guillermo Gutierrez Morquecho, Director of the Maquiladoras Association, said that even in this month of December growth is atypical, because it is not common that companies keep on hiring this late in the year.

Jose Luis Armendariz Bailon, AMAC’S Chairman, said that this has been a year of steady growth, as had not been seen since the crisis started in October 2007.

He said that the sector that has posted the largest growth is automotive, followed by electronics and home appliances.
