Automotive sector closed last year with 10% growth in employment over 2011, according to Rogelio Padilla de Leon, the industry’s union leader in the State of Aguascalientes.

“We know there is gradual hiring, growth in installed companies is expected to be significant, and some of those companies have already expanded their facilities”, he said in an interview.

Automotive industry in Aguascalientes has reached 26,000 people working for auto parts manufacturers and the assembler Nissan, in addition to 43,000 indirect jobs.

On July 9, 2012 Nissan started the construction of a new industrial complex in Aguascalientes, where US$2 billion are being invested to generate 3,000 direct jobs and 9,000 indirect jobs through suppliers.

This project has already caused the announcement of the installation or expansion of at least 11 suppliers for the automotive sector, which investment will add to US$ 545,538, generating 3,760 jobs.

"In coming years –2013, 2014, 2015, growth is expected based on the business plan we know, which will fortunately consolidate the State’s position in the metal-mechanic-automotive sector” Padilla de Leon said.

"We have no estimates yet on the number of jobs to be generated by the expansions, because there are companies that are growing up to 120%, which does not necessarily mean that employment will post such growth”.

Mr. Padilla considers that 9,000 new jobs will be generated by the automotive industry within the next 3 years, to exceed 12,000 when added to those created in 2012.

“(Nissan’s new plant) will be working at 100% capacity and in addition to those 3,400 (jobs) we are speaking of at least 9,000 more”.

“There are still other projects and plans that are fortunately materializing and some others are underway, we may expect the arrival of other auto parts suppliers to the State of Aguascalientes, even big companies”, he said.
